What Happened
On the evening of July 29, 2023, John Montgomery’s son, DaJon Montgomery, made the heartbreaking discovery of his father’s lifeless body outside his grandmother’s home. DaJon recalled the moment when he visited the house, honked the horn, and went to check on his father, only to find him lying in the grass, unresponsive.
Madison County Sheriff’s Department officers responded to the incident call at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Hudson Road, near Highway 16 West, in the Madison County area. Upon arrival, they found John Montgomery had died from a gunshot wound to the head.
Family Reactions
John’s wife, DaShundris Montgomery, expressed her grief, saying, “I know God will get me through it, but right now, it’s just a hard pill to swallow.” The family is struggling to understand how such a tragedy could have happened, especially given their deep love for John.
Ruby Poston, John’s grandmother-in-law, also spoke of her loss, saying, “I’m just hurt. I’m just broken. I’m depending on God to see us through this. It will be a while before I can really get myself together, and I love John.”
DaJon, who is still processing the loss, shared what he would miss most about his father: “His personality. The way he cared for us.”
