Marilyn Garcin was a distinguished co-founder of Journey of Hope Botswana, a non-governmental organization dedicated to community development and social support in Botswana. She was born in Plettenberg Bay, Western Cape, and attended Oteniqua High School in George. Her educational journey continued at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, where she studied, equipping her with skills that would later contribute to her impactful work in Botswana.

Relocating to Gaborone, the capital city of Botswana, Marilyn established herself as a vital member of the local community. She was married and known for her warmth, dedication, and commitment to service. Marilyn’s move to Botswana marked a significant life chapter, where she dedicated much of her energy to humanitarian efforts and community building.

In 2008, Marilyn Garcin co-founded Journey of Hope Botswana alongside Bev Denbury and Rita Keevil. The NGO was established with the goal of supporting vulnerable populations and fostering community resilience across Botswana. Marilyn’s long-standing involvement in the organization spanned over 16 years, during which she played a crucial role in its development and outreach. Her leadership and dedication helped shape the NGO’s programs and initiatives.

With extensive experience in the hospitality industry, Marilyn was responsible for managing logistical aspects of the organization’s major events, known as the Big Journeys. She handled travel arrangements, accommodations, and meal preparations, ensuring that volunteers and participants experienced seamless and welcoming journeys. Her homemade quiches, rusks, and brownies became a cherished part of the volunteer experience, often serving as highlights during gatherings and trips.

Marilyn’s presence was deeply felt within the NGO and the broader community. She was admired not only for her organizational skills but also for her kindness, warmth, and genuine care for others. Her contributions extended beyond her official role, as she fostered a sense of camaraderie and support among volunteers and community members alike.

On August 1, 2025, Marilyn Garcin passed away following a period of hospitalization. Her death was met with profound sadness from her family, friends, colleagues, and the community. The organization and supporters expressed heartfelt condolences, recognizing her invaluable contributions and the lasting impact she made in Botswana.

Her legacy endures through the ongoing work of Journey of Hope Botswana and the countless lives she touched. Marilyn Garcin’s dedication and warmth continue to inspire those committed to community service. Her passing is a significant loss, but her memory remains a beacon of compassion and service, and she is fondly remembered for her profound influence on the NGO and the people she served.
