It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our colleague and CEU alumnus, Evgeny (Zhenya) Belyakov, who tragically passed away in early July 2025. Zhenya’s loss is a profound one for the CEU Democracy Institute and the wider community, as he was deeply loved and respected by all who had the privilege of working with him.

    What Happened

Evgeny (Zhenya) Belyakov joined the CEU Democracy Institute as a staff member on April 10, 2025, and was welcomed warmly by colleagues from all areas of the university. His passing, which occurred just months after beginning this new chapter, has left a significant void in the hearts of his friends, colleagues, and all who knew him. His dedication to human rights and his strong sense of justice made him a valuable and influential member of the CEU community.

    Who Was Evgeny (Zhenya) Belyakov?

Zhenya was a passionate human rights advocate, political activist, and a former student at Central European University (CEU), where he studied at the History, Jewish Studies Specialization, and International Relations Departments between 2008 and 2012. He earned his MA in Comparative History of Central, Eastern, and South-Eastern Europe, with a thesis titled “The Problems of Dissent and Jewish Emigration in Soviet-US Detente (1968-1975)”.

Throughout his career, Zhenya fought tirelessly for justice, particularly in his native Russia and Hungary, as well as internationally. His work focused on the defense of human rights, and his activism left an indelible mark on the communities he served. Zhenya was well-known for his strong moral compass, his deep commitment to human rights, and his unyielding drive for justice.

    Background or Timeline

Zhenya’s journey at CEU was just one chapter in a life devoted to the pursuit of truth, justice, and the betterment of society. His academic work focused on political history and human rights, particularly the struggles of marginalized communities during periods of political tension. After completing his education at CEU, he went on to become a prominent figure in human rights advocacy, tirelessly working for the causes he believed in.

He had a notable career fighting for justice and equality in his home country of Russia, as well as in Hungary, where he contributed to numerous causes aimed at improving societal conditions. His work at the CEU Democracy Institute allowed him to continue advocating for political change and supporting critical discussions on democracy and human rights.

    Public or Social Media Reaction

Following the announcement of Zhenya’s death, there has been an outpouring of grief and tributes on social media and from CEU alumni, colleagues, and friends. Many have shared memories of Zhenya’s dedication, his sharp intellect, and his heartfelt commitment to the values he held dear. His passing has not only impacted those who worked with him but also touched many of his former classmates and fellow activists. A Facebook event has been set up to keep the community informed and updated, and it has served as a space for people to come together and share their thoughts, memories, and condolences.

Official Statement or What Happens Next

In honor of Zhenya’s contributions and memory, an informal memorial gathering will take place on Thursday, August 7 at Gólya (Orczy út 46–48, District VIII, Budapest). The gathering provides a space for his family, friends, colleagues, and former classmates to come together to remember Zhenya’s life and work. Details and updates can be followed via a Facebook event, where more information about the memorial will be shared.

His family, friends, colleagues, and former classmates have extended their heartfelt condolences during this difficult time. His passing serves as a poignant reminder of the power of one individual’s passion for justice and the legacy they leave behind.

    Closing Line

This story may be updated with more information as it becomes available. The CEU community, alongside Zhenya’s family and friends, will forever remember his passion, his advocacy, and his contributions to human rights. His legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him, and he will always be cherished in their hearts.
