The hockey world mourns the loss of Mark Kirton, a celebrated Canadian professional ice hockey player, who passed away on August 17, 2025, at the age of 67. Kirton succumbed to complications from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), leaving behind a legacy of sportsmanship and dedication both on and off the ice.

    What Happened

Mark Kirton passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease he had been living with since 2018. His death was confirmed on August 17, 2025, at the age of 67.

    Who Is Mark Kirton

Born on February 3, 1958, in Regina, Saskatchewan, Kirton grew up in Scarborough, Ontario, where he developed a passion for hockey. A skilled center, he played 266 games in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, and Vancouver Canucks, earning respect for his talent and sportsmanship. Following his retirement in 1989, Kirton worked as a realtor in Oakville, Ontario, while remaining connected to the hockey community.

    Background and Career Highlights

Kirton began his hockey journey with the Wexford Warriors, later joining the Peterborough Petes in the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League. During his final junior season, he won the J. Ross Robertson Cup and was named an All-Star center at the 1978 Memorial Cup, also receiving the George Parsons Trophy for sportsmanship.

Drafted 48th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft, Kirton enjoyed a successful professional career across both the NHL and AHL. He accumulated 113 points in the NHL and 325 points in the AHL, leaving a lasting impression on teammates, coaches, and fans alike. Beyond the ice, Kirton provided mentorship to former teammate Börje Salming following Salming’s ALS diagnosis in 2022, demonstrating his continued commitment to his hockey family.

    Public and Social Media Reaction

Tributes have poured in from the hockey community, fans, and former teammates. Many praised Kirton’s dedication, kindness, and influence both as a player and mentor. Social media users highlighted his resilience in facing ALS, noting his contributions to Canadian hockey and the inspiration he provided to those living with the disease.
