Public funeral set for Friday, Aug. 22 to honor fallen officer, David Rose, after fatal shooting on Aug. 8

    What Happened

On August 8, 2025, DeKalb County police officer David Rose, 33, was tragically killed in the line of duty when a gunman opened fire outside the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) campus in Atlanta. Officer Rose, who was the first to respond to the shooting, was fatally shot during the attack. The shooting caused a lockdown near Emory University and led to six buildings at the CDC being hit by gunfire.

The suspect, Patrick White, 30, reportedly blamed COVID-19 vaccines for his mental health issues and fired over 180 shots at the CDC. White was later found dead near the scene. Officer Rose was the only fatality in the attack, though no civilians were injured.

    Who Is Officer David Rose?

David Rose, a new recruit to the DeKalb County Police Department, had only been with the force for a few months after graduating from the academy in March 2025. Before this, he served four years in the U.S. Marines and worked for the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office. Rose leaves behind his wife, who is seven months pregnant with their third child, and two young children.

His mother, Deveane Atkinson, shared with 11Alive that her son had a deep commitment to serving others and was always known for his kindness, even temperament, and willingness to help.

    Community Support and Fundraising

Since the tragedy, there has been an outpouring of support from across Atlanta and Georgia. A GoFundMe campaign for Officer Rose’s family has raised more than $556,000 to date, with funds supporting his children’s education. Additionally, 1,200 participants took part in the Atlanta’s Finest 5K, raising an extra $40,000 for Rose’s family.

    Funeral Service Details

A public funeral will be held on Friday, Aug. 22, 2025, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Atlanta (4400 N Peachtree Rd., Dunwoody, GA 30338). The service will be preceded by security screening, with doors opening at 9:30 a.m. The church has offered both free and overflow parking on the campus.

    Following the Service:

A special tribute to Officer Rose will include:

    • Taps,

    • A 21-gun salute,

    • A flyover,

    • A final call outside the church.

    Official Statement:

Atlanta law enforcement, firefighters, and the community gathered to honor Officer Rose, praising him as a hero who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Superintendent of the DeKalb Police Department expressed his sorrow: “We will always remember Officer David Rose for his service and his dedication. His death is a reminder of the dangers our officers face every day.”

    Closing:

Officer David Rose’s tragic passing has left a permanent mark on his community, but his legacy as a dedicated public servant will continue to inspire those who knew him. Rest in peace, Officer Rose.
