On January 15th, 2014, two boys, Rodney Scott and Clayton McCarter, vanished without a trace from Potter Children’s Home in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Their disappearance, now spanning over 11 years, remains unsolved, leaving family, friends, and the community devastated and seeking answers. Despite the passage of time, the case has not been closed, and both boys have not been heard from since that fateful night.

    What Happened

Rodney Scott, 13, and Clayton McCarter, 15, were last seen together in the 300 Block of Chestnut Street, leaving Potter Children’s Home in Bowling Green. While it was initially believed that the boys may have run away together, the subsequent events have raised more questions than answers. It is believed that they left willingly, but what happened after they disappeared is still unknown.

Neither Rodney nor Clayton have made contact with their families, nor have they used their Social Security numbers, leading authorities and loved ones to fear the worst. Despite ongoing efforts to locate the boys, their whereabouts remain a mystery. The case has prompted widespread concerns, especially considering the circumstances of their disappearance: it was bitterly cold that night, and both boys left without coats or shoes, which seems unusual for children who may have been trying to escape.

    Descriptions of the Missing Boys

    Rodney Michael Scott (pictured left):

    • Age at the time of disappearance: 13 years old
    • Height: 5′ 4″
    • Weight: 120 lbs
    • Hair: Brown
    • Eyes: Brown

    Clayton Lynn McCarter (pictured right):

    • Age at the time of disappearance: 15 years old
    • Height: 5′ 11″
    • Weight: 160 lbs
    • Hair: Brown
    • Eyes: Blue
    • Notable health conditions: ADHD and oppositional defiant disorder, developmental disability (cognitive level of a 5-year-old)

    The Case Remains Open

Despite the cold conditions on the night of their disappearance, neither Rodney nor Clayton were found with coats or shoes, further complicating the mystery of what happened to them. It has now been over a decade, and the case remains unsolved. The lack of evidence, combined with the absence of any communication or use of official identification, continues to trouble investigators.

The Bowling Green Police Department continues to investigate the case, and they urge anyone with any information, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, to come forward. The hope is that someone, somewhere, may remember something that could lead to solving the case and bringing closure to the families who have been left in agony.

    Call for Help

The disappearance of Rodney and Clayton is a haunting reminder of how vulnerable children can be, and how, sometimes, the smallest piece of information can make all the difference. If you have any information about their whereabouts or what may have happened to them, please contact the Bowling Green Police Department at 270-393-4244.

Let’s continue to raise awareness of this case. Someone out there knows something, and together we can bring justice to these families who have lived with uncertainty for far too long.
