His scoring dominance was unmatched, leading both the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference (OVAC) and the state of Ohio in scoring during the 1967–68 and 1968–69 seasons.
Hornyak averaged an astonishing 42.7 points per game as a junior and 41.9 points as a senior, cementing his reputation as one of the greatest high school scorers in state history. His legendary 86-point game against Tiltonsville High School and 61-point performance against rival Bellaire High School remain etched in Ohio basketball lore. By the end of his prep career, he had amassed 2,385 points, then a conference record.
College Career at Ohio State
Hornyak went on to star at Ohio State University, sitting out his freshman season due to NCAA rules before leading the Buckeyes in scoring for three straight years (1970–1973). In just 69 games, he totaled 1,572 points, earning three All-Big Ten honors and honorable mention All-American recognition in his final two seasons.
