Richmond County, Georgia – A tense situation unfolded Wednesday afternoon when two armed juveniles, ages 14 and 16, were apprehended after a dramatic foot chase and K9 deployment near Salem Arms, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

    What Happened

Around 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Deputies Mitchell (#122) and Gagne (#121) attempted to stop two juveniles who were reportedly armed with pistols. The chase led deputies through wooded terrain and into a ravine near Rosier Road and Eric Court.

Deputy Robert Banks (K11) and his K9 partner, Gajes, responded to assist. After tracking the suspects, K9 Gajes alerted to a ravine where the juveniles were hiding in a hole. Before releasing the K9, Deputy Banks located both juveniles, and they were safely taken into custody.

Two loaded handguns were recovered from the scene, including one firearm reported stolen. The suspects were later transported to the Youth Development Center.

    Who Were the Suspects

The suspects were identified only as two Black male juveniles, ages 14 and 16. Due to their age, their names have not been released to the public. Both were found in possession of loaded firearms during the arrest.

    Background

Authorities noted that the Salem Arms area has been under increased patrols due to recent incidents of crime and safety concerns. Sheriff’s deputies emphasized their commitment to proactive policing, with a focus on preventing armed juvenile activity from escalating into more serious violence.

    Public and Social Media Reaction

Local residents expressed relief that the situation ended without injuries. Social media users praised the deputies and K9 Gajes for their quick response, while others highlighted the growing concern of youth access to firearms. Many community members echoed calls for stronger youth support programs to address the root causes of juvenile violence.

    Official Statement

Sheriff Eugene Brantley commended the deputies for their courage and teamwork:

“Our Road Patrol Deputies are stepping up patrols in areas with problems such as Salem Arms, and we are not just driving by — we are getting out of our cars and getting the job done. I am extremely proud of Deputies Mitchell, Gagne, Banks, and K9 Gajes for their outstanding work today in bringing these armed juveniles safely into custody.”

Brantley stressed the need for strong community partnerships to combat youth crime, adding:

“We will not tolerate this behavior, and we all know too well the deadly consequences that often come when juveniles are armed.”
