A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Screven County, Georgia, this morning, as a 5-year-old girl, Kyleigh Roper, was struck and killed while waiting for her school bus. The tragic event occurred at approximately 6:39 a.m. on Thursday, September 11, 2025, along Whitehill Road in Sylvania, Georgia.

    What Happened

According to the Georgia State Patrol, Kyleigh Roper was waiting at the bus stop when the tragic accident occurred. As a Dodge Dart was traveling northbound on Whitehill Road, Roper unexpectedly darted into the roadway for an unknown reason and was struck by the vehicle. The impact was immediate and devastating.

Emergency services responded within minutes, and Roper was transported by Screven County EMS to Optim Medical Center in Sylvania. Sadly, despite efforts to save her, Roper was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival at the hospital.

The incident has left the local community in shock, and authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident. The Screven County Sheriff’s Office has extended their condolences to the grieving family, describing the loss as “heartbreaking” and a tragic reminder of how precious life is.

    Reactions

The loss of such a young life has left the community shaken, with many expressing their grief over the senseless tragedy. Kyleigh’s mother, who shared photographs of her daughter with local news outlets, described her as a sweet, precious child who was loved by all who knew her.

The Screven County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement, offering their deepest condolences to the Roper family: “Our hearts are broken by the tragic loss of such a young and precious life. On behalf of the entire Screven County Sheriff’s Office, we extend our deepest condolences, thoughts, and prayers to the family and all those affected by this heartbreaking event.”

The event has reignited conversations about safety near school bus stops and the responsibility drivers have when approaching such areas. Locals are reflecting on how crucial it is to exercise caution, especially in residential areas where children gather before and after school.

    What’s Next

The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing. Authorities have not yet determined the exact reasons why Kyleigh may have run into the road, and the Georgia State Patrol is working to piece together further details of the crash.

As the community mourns, there are likely to be renewed calls for increased safety measures in school zones to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future. In the wake of this tragic incident, local school districts and law enforcement may consider reevaluating traffic safety plans surrounding school bus stops to ensure the safety of children while waiting for transportation.

    Closing

This is a developing story. We will update this article as more information becomes available.

The loss of young Kyleigh Roper is a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the need for increased awareness and safety around school bus stops. Our thoughts are with her family and the community as they navigate this devastating time.
