The steam engine community is mourning the loss of Gary Shacht, a longtime friend, veteran engineer, and passionate enthusiast, who passed away on Thursday. Known for his deep knowledge of steam engines and his animated presence at gatherings, Gary will be remembered by many for both his technical expertise and his warm, spirited personality.

Gary was a familiar face at the Gary Vouk and Brian Vouk farm steam-ups, where he could often be found sharing stories and lending a hand to fellow engineers. He was also a regular at events with the Hungry Hollow Steam and Gas Engine Club, as well as the annual shows in Edgar and Baraboo, where his enthusiasm for steam history and machinery always shone through.

Friends and fellow hobbyists recall Gary as not only a skilled engineer but also a gifted conversationalist. His ability to bring history to life, paired with his willingness to share knowledge with newcomers and old friends alike, made him a cherished figure in the community. His passing leaves a significant void among the people who gathered with him year after year to celebrate steam power and preserve its legacy.

Those who knew Gary say his legacy will live on in the engines he cared for, the countless conversations he inspired, and the friendships he built across the steam hobby world. Plans to honor his life and contributions will be shared with the community in the days ahead.
