RAYMOND, Miss. – Mississippi Delta Community College (MDCC) is grieving the sudden loss of freshman offensive lineman Emanuell Cooks, 18, who died Thursday night following a football game against Hinds Community College.

Cooks, a native of Elba, Alabama, collapsed after the matchup and was given immediate medical attention by emergency personnel. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

School officials confirmed his passing Friday morning, calling it a devastating moment for the Trojans community. “Emanuell was a dedicated student-athlete with a bright future ahead of him,” MDCC said in a statement. “We extend our deepest condolences to his family, teammates, coaches, and friends during this heartbreaking time.”

Cooks had just begun his first season with the Trojans but had already made a strong impression for his work ethic, leadership, and uplifting personality. Friends and teammates described him as respectful, positive, and deeply passionate about football.

The cause of death has not yet been released, and officials are working with medical personnel to gather more information.

Tributes have poured in from teammates, coaches, and the Elba High School community, where Cooks graduated earlier this year. His sudden passing has shaken the Mississippi junior college football world, leaving players, staff, and fans mourning his loss.

Funeral arrangements will be announced once finalized. MDCC also confirmed that grief counseling services will be available for students and staff.
