Greensboro, NC — After a slight delay, the much-anticipated Piggly Wiggly grocery store in Greensboro is expected to open by Thanksgiving 2025, with developers planning additional new restaurants in the Freeman Mill Square shopping center shortly thereafter. The grocery store, a key part of the development, has faced some setbacks but is now in the final stages of preparation.
What Happened
The original opening for the Piggly Wiggly store in Greensboro was slated for this summer but has been postponed. According to Shehzad Quamar, one of the developers along with Shahzad Akbar, the renovation of the 14,000-square-foot space is nearing completion, and the project is now going through the inspection process with the City of Greensboro. Once inspections are finalized and the store passes health department checks, the next steps will include stocking the store and hiring employees, with hopes to start recruitment by November 1, 2025.
Quamar explained, “The inspection process can be tedious sometimes, especially with older buildings, but so far the city has been very helpful in trying to get this opened. We are thankful the city manager and the city of Greensboro are trying to accommodate us in getting this open as soon as possible.”
What Happens Next
Once Piggly Wiggly opens, the focus will shift to bringing new restaurants into the Freeman Mill Square shopping center, adding more dining options for local residents. The developers are hopeful that the grocery store opening will mark the beginning of a revitalization in the area.
