Crowsnest Pass, Alberta — The search for six-year-old Darius Macdougall, who went missing on September 21, 2025, near Crowsnest Pass, Alberta, has entered its seventh day. Despite intensive efforts, the child, who has autism, remains unaccounted for, and authorities continue to search the rugged wilderness surrounding Island Lake Campground.
What Happened
Darius was last seen on the morning of Sunday, September 21, 2025, when he and six family members took a walk from their campsite, located approximately four kilometers south of Crowsnest Pass. Upon returning, Darius was missing, and the family immediately raised the alarm. Since then, search teams have been tirelessly working to locate him.
Search Efforts
As of now, 225 personnel are actively involved in the search, including 128 trained search-and-rescue specialists from Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan. The operation is using a range of resources, including:
- Search dogs
- Helicopters
- Drones with thermal and infrared cameras
- Specialized RCMP tactical units
- Conservation Officers, Sheriffs, and Fish and Wildlife officers
RCMP Cpl. Gina Slaney emphasized that there are no plans to scale back the search, and the operation remains day-to-day. Authorities have vowed to use all available resources to locate Darius.
Incident During Search
In the course of the operation, a severely injured hiker was discovered in the same area. The hiker was evacuated by STARS Air Ambulance, but police clarified that this incident did not impact the search efforts for Darius. They also issued a reminder for the public to stay out of the search area to avoid hindering the operation and putting themselves in danger.
Public Information Centre
A public information center has been set up at the Crow’s Nest Sports Complex in Coleman to assist with the search. Officials are asking residents familiar with the area to share any knowledge of potential hiding spots or safe locations where Darius may have sought refuge.

While Darius is verbal, RCMP officers have noted that his autism may prevent him from responding to calls. His family remains on-site, hopeful and determined, as the search for their missing son continues.
