Dragan Popović, a legendary figure in the world of soccer, passed away on September 29, 2025, at the age of 84. Known for his long and distinguished career as both a player and coach, Popović’s legacy spans multiple leagues, including the North American Soccer League (NASL), Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL), and youth soccer.

    What Happened

Popović, a Yugoslavian-born soccer talent, began his professional career in 1958 at the young age of 17, playing in his home country of Yugoslavia. He later moved to the United States in 1967 to play for the St. Louis Stars in the first National Professional Soccer League, eventually joining the NASL after the merger with the United Soccer Association. Popović’s coaching career began in the 1970s, and he was instrumental in coaching multiple teams to success, including leading the New York Arrows to four consecutive MISL championships from 1979 to 1982.

He went on to coach other teams in both outdoor and indoor soccer, including the Golden Bay Earthquakes, Las Vegas Americans, and Pittsburgh Spirit. His coaching philosophy was built on nurturing talent and fostering competitive teams, and his leadership helped propel many players and teams to success.

    Achievements and Honors

Popović was a respected figure in the soccer world, both as a player and a coach. As a player, he earned multiple accolades, including being named to the NASL All-League First Team and the NASL All-Tournament Team. As a coach, he was named Coach of the Year twice, once in 1981 with the New York Arrows and again in 1983 with the Golden Bay Earthquakes.

Popović was inducted into the St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame in 2004, recognizing his immense contributions to the sport. His youth coaching achievements were also remarkable, with Popović coaching several championship teams in the Missouri State Cup, including Boys U-13, U-14, and U-15 teams across various years.

    Youth Soccer Legacy

Beyond his professional playing and coaching career, Popović made a significant impact in youth soccer. As the director of youth soccer at Lou Fusz Soccer Club in St. Louis, he led several teams to success, including multiple Missouri State Cup victories. His commitment to developing young players and fostering a love for the game ensured that his influence extended far beyond his professional years.

    Remembering Dragan Popović

Popović’s family, friends, and the soccer community will remember him as a dedicated and passionate figure who gave so much to the sport. His coaching legacy, especially with the New York Arrows and his youth teams, will live on through the many players he mentored and the teams he helped shape.

His passing marks the end of an era in American soccer, but his contributions to the game and his impact on the players and communities he worked with will not be forgotten.
