Oktoberfest Closed in Munich After Explosives Found in Residential Building, One Dead

The Oktoberfest beer festival in Munich was shut down on Wednesday following a discovery of explosives in a residential building that caught fire, resulting in at least one death. Authorities are investigating the incident, which is linked to a domestic dispute, and special forces were called in to defuse explosive traps.

    What Happened

The tragic event unfolded early Wednesday morning when Munich police responded to a fire in a residential building in the northern part of the city. Reports indicated that shots and explosions were heard in the vicinity, prompting a large-scale emergency response. Authorities discovered explosives in the building and called in special forces to handle the situation. Police confirmed that the fire had been “deliberately set” and that “explosive traps” were found inside the building.

The explosion and fire led to the death of one individual, and another person is reported missing. It remains unclear whether the deceased was the suspected perpetrator or someone else. The explosion is believed to be part of a domestic dispute, and a bomb threat was issued by the suspected individual.

    Oktoberfest Closure

As a precaution, Munich authorities closed the Oktoberfest festival grounds for the day, citing a threat to public safety. Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter announced the closure, explaining that police would conduct a thorough search of the Wiesn (Oktoberfest fairgrounds) to ensure there were no other explosive devices. He stated that if the area could not be cleared by 5 p.m., the festival would remain closed for the day.

A loudspeaker announcement was made at the festival, warning visitors of a “bomb threat.” Police also searched the Oktoberfest grounds for additional explosives and evacuated workers from the area.

    Investigations and Public Safety

Authorities confirmed that the initial call was in response to a fire in the residential building. “Loud banging noises were heard,” and an injured individual was discovered who may be linked to the explosion. The investigation continues as police work to determine the full scope of the incident.

Oktoberfest, the world’s largest beer festival, typically attracts up to six million visitors. This year’s festival began on September 20 and was scheduled to run until October 5. The fairgrounds are expected to remain closed until at least 5 p.m. local time, while emergency personnel continue to investigate and secure the area.
