The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools (WS/FCS) Board of Education has announced the appointment of Dr. Don Phipps as the district’s next superintendent, effective December 1, 2025. With over two decades of experience in education leadership, Dr. Phipps brings a wealth of knowledge and a proven track record to the role.
A Proven Leader in Education
Dr. Phipps has a long and distinguished career in education. Since 2018, he has served as the superintendent of Caldwell County Schools, where he led the district with a focus on academic excellence and fiscal responsibility. Prior to that, he served as the superintendent of Beaufort County Schools for more than eight years. Dr. Phipps began his education career at Cumberland County Schools, where he held various administrative positions.
In 2023, Dr. Phipps was named North Carolina’s Superintendent of the Year, a recognition that highlights his outstanding leadership and dedication to public education. He is also the current chair of the North Carolina School Superintendents’ Association, further underscoring his respect and influence within the state’s educational community.

Dr. Phipps will assume his new role following the conclusion of Ms. Catty Moore’s service as Interim Superintendent on November 30, 2025. Phipps has been appointed to a 15-month contract, with the goal of guiding WS/FCS toward long-term stability and success.
