Greensboro Mayor’s Race Heats Up as Nancy Vaughan Announces Non-Reelection

For the first time in twelve years, Greensboro, North Carolina, will be electing a new mayor after incumbent Nancy Vaughan announced she will not seek re-election. With the mayor’s seat up for grabs, four candidates, all lifelong residents of Greensboro, are vying for the role, each with their vision for the city’s future.

A Race Focused on Economic Development and Housing

The candidates share a common focus on economic development, with Robbie Perkins and Mark Cummings both emphasizing the need to revitalize Greensboro’s economy. Perkins, a longtime resident, highlights the importance of developing housing and upgrading the downtown area to cater to the city’s growing workforce. He believes that creating a vibrant downtown will provide more opportunities for people to enjoy their off-time, making it an essential aspect of the city’s growth.

Mark Cummings, who has lived in various districts of the city, also stresses the importance of economic development across all parts of Greensboro. He brought up the lack of a Chick-fil-A on the east side of the city, pointing to how businesses are often tied to “rooftop income”—the income levels of local residents. Cummings advocates for the balanced distribution of development across Greensboro to increase economic opportunities for all areas.

Affordable Housing at the Forefront for Akir Khan

Akir Khan, another candidate in the race, is advocating for more affordable housing options throughout the city. He points out the discrepancy between the rising home prices and the subsidies offered by the city, stating that the current price range for homes in Greensboro—averaging around $300,000—leaves many people without affordable options. Khan proposes expanding affordable housing in various neighborhoods, with homes priced between $200,000 and $250,000, making them more accessible for the city’s residents.

Marikay Abuzuaiter: Improving Infrastructure and Transit

Marikay Abuzuaiter, a current member of the city council, focuses on improving the city’s infrastructure, particularly transportation. She plans to work with the next council to focus on making the city’s roads and transit system more efficient and effective. Abuzuaiter believes that Greensboro’s existing transit system is strong but needs to be streamlined for greater efficiency, while also making sure that new development is in line with the needs of the growing population.

    Election Day Information

With the primary election set for October 7, 2025, residents of Greensboro will have the opportunity to choose their next mayor. Voters can expect a range of perspectives on issues that will shape the city’s future, from economic development to affordable housing and infrastructure improvements. Importantly, parking will be free at polling stations, ensuring ease of access for voters.

    Closing

The Greensboro mayoral race is poised to bring significant changes to the city, with each candidate offering unique ideas for its growth and prosperity. As Election Day approaches, residents will have the chance to weigh in on their city’s future and select a leader who will guide Greensboro into the next phase of development.
