A tragic crash in west Phoenix on Sunday evening resulted in the death of a 6-year-old girl and critical injuries to her 4-year-old sister. The driver responsible, 21-year-old Turatsinze Gadi, was arrested after fleeing the scene and later charged with second-degree homicide and aggravated assault.

    What Happened

The accident occurred near 75th Avenue on Interstate 10 in west Phoenix, when a pickup truck struck another vehicle, causing the vehicle to hit a concrete median. According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS), the vehicle that crashed into the median carried one adult and four children. Tragically, 6-year-old Armyah from Phoenix died from the injuries she sustained in the crash. Her 4-year-old sister was also taken to the hospital with serious brain injuries.

The girl’s family confirmed Armyah’s death and stated that her younger sister’s condition is critical. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support the family during this difficult time.

    Driver’s Fleeing and Arrest

The driver of the pickup truck, identified as 21-year-old Turatsinze Gadi, fled the scene after the crash. However, Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) cameras tracked his vehicle as it traveled to SR 202, where it stopped at a Quikstop store. DPS officers located Gadi at the store and took him into custody.

    DUI Charges and Investigation

DPS conducted a field sobriety test, which showed that Gadi was intoxicated. A blood test later confirmed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.219, more than twice the legal limit. Gadi also tested positive for THC, according to court records.

Gadi was booked into Maricopa County Jail on charges of second-degree homicide, aggravated assault, and endangerment. During an interview with investigators, Gadi admitted to drinking beer and tequila at a birthday party before the crash. He also claimed that the other vehicle involved in the crash had “brake-checked” him, but this account did not align with findings from the investigation. Gadi further explained that he fled the scene because he was in shock and wanted to call his girlfriend, which led him to the Quikstop.

    Investigation and Community Impact

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, with detectives continuing to gather evidence. The tragic incident has left the Phoenix community reeling, particularly as the family of the young victims grapples with their loss and the ongoing health challenges facing the surviving child.

    Public and Social Media Reactions

The incident has sparked outrage on social media, with many condemning the actions of the driver and expressing condolences for the family. Community members have rallied around the family, offering support through the GoFundMe campaign set up in Armyah’s memory.
