Private First Class Ronald Leroy Coker, a brave U.S. Marine, was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary acts of heroism during the Vietnam War. On March 24, 1969, in the northwest Quang Tri Province of Vietnam, Pfc. Coker made the ultimate sacrifice, demonstrating remarkable courage and selflessness.

    Medal of Honor Citation

Pfc. Ronald Leroy Coker was serving as a rifleman with the 2d Platoon, Company M, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division (Rein) FMF, when his act of gallantry took place on March 24, 1969. Leading a patrol in the dense jungle, he and his squad encountered five enemy soldiers on a narrow trail. As the squad pursued the enemies into a cave, they came under intense fire, wounding one of the Marines and forcing the others to take cover.

Amidst the chaos and danger, Pfc. Coker disregarded his own safety and crawled across the enemy-infested terrain to reach his wounded comrade. Though he was wounded by enemy fire, Pfc. Coker continued to move forward, throwing a hand grenade to suppress the hostile fire enough to reach the injured Marine. As he began to drag the wounded soldier to safety, an enemy grenade landed near them. Without hesitation, Pfc. Coker grabbed the grenade with both hands and attempted to shield his comrade. The grenade exploded, severely injuring him, but he still refused to abandon his fellow Marine.

Despite his injuries, Pfc. Coker continued to drag his wounded companion, moving towards friendly lines. Two more grenades exploded near him, causing further injuries, yet Pfc. Coker persevered in his mission, driven solely by the desire to save his comrade. His heroic actions inspired his fellow Marines, who eventually suppressed the enemy fire enough to reach him and carry him to safety. Sadly, Pfc. Coker succumbed to his wounds shortly thereafter.

Pfc. Coker’s heroic deeds exemplify the highest ideals of the Marine Corps and the U.S. Naval Service. His gallantry and unwavering commitment to his comrades and duty were beyond measure, and his actions on that day will never be forgotten.

    Legacy and Honor

Pfc. Ronald Leroy Coker’s bravery and sacrifice have left an indelible mark on the history of the U.S. Marine Corps and the nation. His Medal of Honor citation tells the story of a man who put the safety of others above his own, embodying the spirit of selflessness and courage. Though his life was cut short, his actions continue to inspire Marines and all those who serve in the armed forces.

Today, Pfc. Coker is remembered not only as a hero but as a symbol of the sacrifices made by countless service members who risk everything for the safety and freedom of others. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his comrades, his country, and all those who hear his story.

    Closing Line

Pfc. Ronald Leroy Coker’s extraordinary bravery and dedication to his fellow Marines will always be remembered. We honor his memory and salute his unwavering courage in the face of danger.
