Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are investigating a tragic death at Charlotte Douglas International Airport after the body of 25-year-old Jose Joaquin De Leon Santiz was found hidden in the landing gear of an American Airlines plane. The plane had recently arrived from Europe, and the discovery was made during a routine maintenance check on Sunday, September 28, 2025.

    What Happened

Around 9 a.m. on Sunday, September 28, airport officials discovered the body while performing maintenance on an American Airlines aircraft. The plane had just arrived from Europe when the tragic finding was made. Upon the discovery, officers arrived at the scene and pronounced the individual deceased. Authorities later identified the body as that of Jose Joaquin De Leon Santiz, a 25-year-old man.

The next of kin for Santiz have been notified, with the Guatemalan Consulate assisting in the process. On October 11, police officially confirmed his identity.

    Investigation Details

The FBI has now taken over the investigation, and the case remains active. American Airlines issued a statement confirming that they are working with law enforcement agencies to assist in the investigation.

While the exact circumstances surrounding how Santiz came to be in the landing gear compartment remain unclear, the incident raises serious questions about airport security and the dangers of unauthorized access to aircraft. The police are currently working to uncover more details surrounding the incident.

    How to Help

Anyone with information related to the investigation is urged to contact the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department at 704-432-8477 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
