The Calgary community is heartbroken following the loss of Kayla Blackwell, a beloved AA Ringette ice hockey player, who passed away on Saturday, October 18th, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. Kayla’s passing has left a profound void in the hearts of her teammates, coaches, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A Passion for Ringette and Excellence on the Ice

Kayla Blackwell’s love for ringette began at a young age, and she quickly rose to become a key player for the Calgary AA Ringette team. Known for her skill, precision, and leadership, Kayla was admired by both teammates and opponents alike. Her relentless drive to excel on the ice made her a standout player, but it was her infectious positivity and sportsmanship that truly set her apart. Whether on or off the ice, Kayla’s energy was contagious, inspiring her team and creating a bond that went beyond the sport.

A True Warrior On and Off the Ice

Even as she faced her own battle with cancer, Kayla continued to inspire. Despite her illness, she remained an integral part of her team, attending practices and games whenever she could. Her determination to keep fighting while supporting her teammates with a smile became a beacon of hope and strength for all who knew her. Kayla’s unwavering spirit in the face of adversity left a lasting impact on the entire Calgary ringette community.

A Kind Heart and a Compassionate Spirit

Outside of her athleticism, Kayla was known for her kindness, compassion, and ability to make others feel valued. She had a remarkable talent for mentoring younger players and offering support to friends in need. Her laughter, warmth, and generosity filled every room she entered, and her willingness to help others left a lasting impression on everyone she met.

Friends, family, and teammates remember Kayla not just as an athlete, but as a true role model who embodied strength, resilience, and love. Her legacy extends far beyond the ice, as she made a positive difference in the lives of all who knew her.

    Ringette Community Mourns Her Passing

The Calgary Ringette Association expressed its deepest condolences in a heartfelt statement, mourning the loss of Kayla. They described her as a “true role model and warrior,” and praised her for her dedication to the sport, which will continue to inspire future generations of athletes. Kayla’s influence on her teammates and the Calgary ringette community will never be forgotten.

    Celebrating Kayla’s Remarkable Legacy

A celebration of life is being planned to honor Kayla’s incredible legacy. Family, friends, and members of the ringette community will come together to share memories, celebrate her achievements, and pay tribute to a life that touched so many.

While Kayla’s time with us was tragically cut short, her spirit and impact will continue to resonate within Calgary’s ringette community. Her story serves as a reminder of the power of perseverance, love, and the indomitable human spirit. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of every young athlete she inspired, every goal scored in her memory, and every teammate who had the privilege of sharing the ice with her.

    Rest in Peace, Kayla

Kayla Blackwell may no longer be with us, but her memory and her influence will live on forever. She was more than just a player—she was a leader, a mentor, and a shining example of strength and kindness. Her legacy will continue to inspire and guide all those who were lucky enough to know her.
