Republican New York City mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa has rejected widespread calls for him to withdraw from the race, defending his decision to stay in the running despite pressure from political observers and prominent figures.
What Happened
On Tuesday, Sliwa held a defiant press conference outside a Manhattan subway station, where he made it clear that he would not be stepping down from the race. This comes after many, including billionaire John Catsimatidis, expressed concerns that Sliwa’s continued candidacy could split the vote and ultimately aid Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani.
“So let’s be very clear. I am not dropping out. Under no circumstance. I’ve already been offered money to drop out, I said no,” Sliwa stated. He also revealed that threats against him and his family have led to the need for armed security. “Never had that in my life,” he added.
Sliwa took aim at his opponent, Andrew Cuomo, accusing the independent candidate of not putting in real effort into his campaign, and relying on Sliwa to bow out. “Cuomo is just sitting back and hoping I drop out,” Sliwa argued.
Calls for Sliwa to Withdraw
Calls for Sliwa to drop out have come from several notable figures, including Catsimatidis, CEO of WABC Radio and Red Apple Media. Catsimatidis, a Republican who ran for mayor in 2013, expressed concern that Sliwa’s candidacy could divide the vote and inadvertently benefit Mamdani. “It’s essential to consolidate support behind a ‘viable alternative’ to avoid a damaging outcome for the city,” said a press release from his office.
Despite the pressure, Sliwa stood firm, telling Fox News Digital, “The billionaires can conspire to pick their candidate … I trust the people. They will make the decision. I will not drop out.”
Mamdani’s Reaction
Democratic socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani appeared to be amused by the situation. “I never thought I would say this, but here we are, where the only candidates who agree that billionaires shouldn’t control the future of this city are the Republican nominee and the Democratic nominee,” Mamdani quipped.
Sliwa’s Campaign
Sliwa is currently on a leave of absence from his long-time position at WABC Radio as he continues his mayoral run. His campaign has been marked by strong rhetoric and defiance against attempts to force him out, even as pressure mounts to unite the opposition behind a single candidate.
