Davidson County, N.C. (WGHP) — A 78-year-old man, Stephen Hicks, is facing two murder charges after the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office found him and the bodies of two family members inside his home on Friday, October 20, 2025. Authorities responded to a well-being check request from a family member, which ultimately led to the discovery of a gruesome crime scene.

    What Happened?

According to the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, the alarming situation unfolded when a family member received a concerning text message from Stephen Hicks, indicating that he had harmed individuals inside his home on Raye Drive. In response to the distressing message, deputies were dispatched to conduct a well-being check, where they made the devastating discovery.

Upon entering the home, deputies found two victims: 76-year-old June Hicks and 45-year-old Stephen Eric Hicks, both deceased. Authorities also found Stephen Hicks at the scene, suffering from minor self-inflicted wounds. He was immediately arrested and taken into custody.

    Who Was Stephen Hicks?

Stephen Hicks, a 78-year-old man from Davidson County, has now been charged with two counts of murder. His initial court appearance occurred on Monday, October 23, 2025. In court, Hicks appeared in a jumpsuit and was handcuffed. When asked about his legal representation, he quietly requested a public defender for his case.

The murder victims, June Hicks and Stephen Eric Hicks, were members of his family. While specific details about their relationship and the events leading to their deaths are still under investigation, authorities confirmed that Hicks had reportedly provided a confession to the murders.

    Details from the Investigation

During his court appearance, the prosecutor noted that Stephen Hicks had allegedly confessed to the double murder. The prosecution requested that Hicks be held without bond due to the violent nature of the crime, and the judge agreed. Hicks was subsequently taken to the Davidson County jail, where he will remain until his next hearing.

    What Happens Next?

Stephen Hicks’ next court appearance is scheduled for November 3, 2025, where further details regarding the case are expected to emerge. The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths of June and Stephen Eric Hicks. Authorities are working to piece together the events that led to the tragic incident.

The community of Davidson County is left in shock as the details of the crime continue to unfold. The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office has urged anyone with additional information to come forward as they work toward seeking justice for the victims.
