Massapequa, NY – October 25, 2025 – The department is deeply saddened to announce the passing of retired Firefighter Robert V. West Jr., who succumbed to a World Trade Center (WTC)-related illness on Friday, October 24, 2025. Firefighter West faithfully served the New York City Fire Department for 24 years, earning respect and admiration for his dedication, courage, and selfless service.

A Life of Service and Sacrifice

Robert V. West Jr. devoted over two decades of his life to protecting the citizens of New York City. Known among his peers for his professionalism and strong sense of duty, he embodied the very spirit of the FDNY — courage, compassion, and unwavering commitment.

His service during and after the September 11, 2001 attacks exemplified the heroism and resilience of New York’s firefighters. Like so many of his brothers and sisters in the department, he continued to face the lasting effects of his exposure during rescue and recovery operations at Ground Zero. His passing serves as another solemn reminder of the continuing sacrifices made by those who responded in the aftermath of 9/11.

    Visitation and Funeral Arrangements

The department has announced the following arrangements to honor Firefighter West’s life and service:

    Visitation:

    • Tuesday, October 28, 2025 – 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM
    • Wednesday, October 29, 2025 – 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
      Massapequa Funeral Home
      4980 Merrick Road
      Massapequa Park, NY 11762

    Mass of Christian Burial:

    • Thursday, October 30, 2025 – 11:15 AM
St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church
      2 Bayview Avenue
      Massapequa, NY 11758

A private cremation will follow immediately after the funeral service.

Remembering Firefighter Robert V. West Jr.

Friends, family, and colleagues remember Firefighter West as a dependable and compassionate man whose humor, humility, and courage left a lasting impression on everyone he met. His dedication to his fellow firefighters and to the community he served stands as a lasting example of what it means to live a life of service.

In his retirement, he remained deeply connected to the firefighter community, continuing to support initiatives for WTC-related illness awareness and advocacy for affected first responders.

    Honoring His Legacy

The FDNY and the broader New York community extend heartfelt condolences to the West family during this difficult time. As the department reflects on his passing, they also honor the thousands of firefighters who continue to bear the long-term effects of their 9/11 service.

“May his memory be a blessing, and may his soul rest in eternal peace.”
