LONDON, ENGLAND (October 28, 2025) – A one-year-old child has tragically passed away after a hazardous materials incident at a flat in Upton Park, east London. The incident, which left two adults and another child hospitalized, has sparked an ongoing investigation by the Metropolitan Police and the London Fire Brigade (LFB).

    What Happened

At around 1:18 PM on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, emergency services were called to a flat in Barking Road, Upton Park in Newham, after two adults and two children arrived at the hospital complaining of a chemical smell. Fire crews responded swiftly to the scene, where they identified the presence of hazardous materials.

Despite efforts by emergency responders, including specially trained firefighters who conducted a thorough sweep of the property and ventilated the area, one of the children later died in hospital while receiving treatment. The child’s identity has not been released at this time, but the tragedy has left the community deeply saddened.

    Investigation Underway

The LFB worked quickly to ensure that the property was safe, evacuating around 12 people from surrounding homes as a precaution. Authorities have not yet disclosed the exact nature of the chemicals involved, and the cause of the hazardous materials release is still under investigation. The incident has prompted an investigation by both the Metropolitan Police and the London Fire Brigade.

A spokesperson from the local council expressed their condolences, saying, “First of all, our thoughts are with the family of the young child who has so tragically lost their life in this terrible incident. Details about the exact nature of the incident are not yet clear, and the Metropolitan Police will remain on the scene as the investigation progresses.”

    Response and Community Support

The incident has shaken the local community, with many expressing their sorrow for the family involved. As the investigation continues, the council has ensured that those evacuated from surrounding properties are being cared for in a safe, warm environment.

The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that the LFB called police to the scene at 1:20 PM, and a full investigation has been launched. Police are working to determine the source of the hazardous materials and whether any criminality is involved.

Official Statements and What Happens Next

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the hazardous materials incident. The LFB has assured the public that safety measures were quickly put in place, and emergency teams have acted with urgency to prevent further harm.

The council and local police continue to urge residents to remain vigilant and report any information that could assist in the investigation. The tragic death of the child has prompted renewed attention to the importance of safety when dealing with hazardous materials in residential areas.

    Closing Line

This story may be updated with more information as the investigation progresses. The community continues to mourn the loss of a young life taken far too soon, and authorities are working tirelessly to determine the full scope of the incident and ensure that justice is served.
