STAMFORD, CT — The Stamford community is deeply grieving the tragic loss of Nelly Ruiz, a 54-year-old woman who was struck and killed by a car on High Ridge Road late on the night of Saturday, November 8, 2025. The fatal incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. near the area of 996 High Ridge Road, a heavily trafficked stretch of road frequented by both pedestrians and vehicles.

    Details of the Accident

According to Stamford Police, Ruiz was crossing High Ridge Road from the eastern side to the western side when she was hit by a 2016 Nissan Altima traveling southbound. Investigators have noted that Ruiz was walking outside of a designated crosswalk at the time of the collision. Emergency responders arrived promptly and transported her to Stamford Hospital for urgent medical care. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of medical personnel, Ruiz succumbed to her injuries early the following morning, Sunday, November 9, 2025.

The driver of the Nissan Altima, a 30-year-old Stamford resident, immediately stopped and cooperated with authorities at the scene. Police have stated that there is no evidence suggesting the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs or was acting recklessly at the time of the accident. The investigation is still ongoing, with the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad (CARS) of the Stamford Police Department leading the inquiry into the incident.

    Investigation and Community Concerns

Law enforcement is actively reviewing traffic video footage, vehicle data, and witness testimonies to reconstruct the events leading to the crash. The police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant information to come forward by contacting the Stamford Police Department at (203) 977-4712.

High Ridge Road has been the site of several pedestrian accidents in recent years, raising concerns about pedestrian safety. Local residents have expressed growing concerns about visibility issues, speeding vehicles, and the lack of crosswalks in certain sections of the road. The tragic death of Nelly Ruiz has intensified calls for enhanced pedestrian safety measures, including improved lighting, additional signage, and the creation of designated crosswalks in high-traffic areas.

    Remembering Nelly Ruiz

Friends and neighbors remember Nelly Ruiz as a compassionate and dedicated individual who was well-respected within her neighborhood. Her sudden passing has left a deep void in the lives of her family and loved ones. Tributes have flooded social media, with friends and family expressing their condolences and support during this heartbreaking time.

Law Enforcement’s Commitment to the Investigation

The Stamford Police Department has offered their condolences to Ruiz’s family, emphasizing their commitment to conducting a thorough and comprehensive investigation. Once the findings of the CARS unit are complete, they will be reviewed to determine if any violations or charges should be filed.

Community Reflection and Call for Action

As the investigation continues, Stamford officials are urging both drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution, especially during nighttime hours and in low-light conditions. This tragic accident has highlighted the need for safer pedestrian infrastructure in Stamford, prompting the community to rally for change and improve safety measures on High Ridge Road.

The passing of Nelly Ruiz serves as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance and responsible driving to prevent further incidents like this. The Stamford community stands united in remembering her and in working towards safer streets for everyone.
