PALM COAST, FL — The peaceful neighborhood of Pinelynn Lane was rocked by tragedy on Wednesday evening, when deputies from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office discovered the bodies of 85-year-old Julio Alonso and his 74-year-old wife, Martha Alonso, in what is suspected to be a murder-suicide.
Authorities are still investigating the circumstances of this devastating incident, which has left the local community in mourning.

What Happened in the Palm Coast Murder-Suicide Incident?

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office received a welfare check request on Wednesday, November 12, at approximately 6:00 p.m., after a family member expressed concerns over their inability to contact the elderly couple for over a day. A hospice nurse helped deputies gain access to the property on Pinelynn Lane, and it was inside the residence that deputies discovered the tragic scene.

Upon entering the home, law enforcement found the bodies of Julio and Martha Alonso in their bedroom. Initial evidence suggests that Julio Alonso shot his wife, Martha, before taking his own life with a gunshot wound.

The couple had last been seen by a neighbor on Tuesday, when they mentioned they were heading to the hospital. However, no further details have been revealed regarding what led up to the incident.

Who Were Julio and Martha Alonso?

Julio Alonso, 85, and Martha Alonso, 74, were known to their neighbors as quiet, elderly residents in the Palm Coast community. Despite their age, the couple had maintained a routine of activity, with Julio being the primary caregiver for his wife, who had received hospice care.

Those close to them describe Julio and Martha as a loving couple, and their sudden deaths have left the neighborhood in shock. Community members are grappling with the loss of two individuals who had long been part of the fabric of their neighborhood.

    Community Reactions and Ongoing Investigation

The tragic death of the Alonsos has sent waves of grief through their family, friends, and neighbors. Sheriff Rick Staly expressed his condolences, highlighting the unbearable nature of losing both parents in such a tragic way.

“Experiencing the loss of a parent is always challenging; however, losing both parents in what appears to be a murder-suicide is unimaginable. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of this couple during this tremendously difficult period. May God grant them peace,” said Sheriff Staly.

Social media tributes and community members have shared heartfelt messages of support for the family and expressed their sorrow over this heartbreaking event.

What Happens Next in the Investigation?

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the incident. The bodies of Julio and Martha Alonso have been sent to the medical examiner’s office for further examination, while the Major Case and Crime Scene Investigation divisions (CSI) are working diligently to gather more information.

Authorities have confirmed that there are no signs of foul play beyond the initial findings, and they are continuing to analyze evidence, witness statements, and the circumstances surrounding the event.

    Mental Health and Community Support

This tragic event serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and support. Sheriff Staly urged individuals who may be struggling with emotional distress or mental health challenges to reach out for help.

“If you feel overwhelmed or hopeless, please reach out. You are not alone,” Sheriff Staly emphasized.

Residents of Flagler County can contact Flagler Cares at 386-319-9483 for local support, or individuals in need can call the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988 or visit 988lifeline.org for confidential support.
