CLARKSVILLE, TN — The Clarksville community is grappling with the tragic death of 52-year-old Michael Atzert, whose red Jeep left the roadway and plunged into the Red River following a crash on Thursday morning, November 13, 2025. Authorities confirmed that criminal charges are pending against the other driver involved in the incident, which caused significant traffic disruptions on I-24 Westbound.

    What Happened:

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP), the fatal crash occurred just before the bridge near mile marker 9.6 on I-24 Westbound, when Atzert’s red Jeep Wrangler collided with a silver Lincoln Town Car. Both vehicles veered off the roadway into the median before coming to a devastating stop. The Lincoln, driven by 28-year-old James Centers, came to rest in nearby woods, while Atzert’s Jeep plunged into the Red River below.

Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene, and the highway was blocked for several hours as authorities worked to secure the area and investigate the crash. Atzert was confirmed dead at the scene, while Centers and his infant passenger were unharmed.

    The Investigation:

The THP’s preliminary investigation revealed that the Lincoln and Jeep collided on I-24, and both vehicles lost control, leading to the fatal sequence of events. While Centers, the driver of the Lincoln, escaped the incident without injury, he remains under investigation, and charges against him are pending.

The THP is continuing to probe the circumstances surrounding the crash. Investigators have yet to determine the exact cause but are focused on gathering further details. As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist in the process.

    Community Reactions:

The news of Atzert’s tragic passing has shocked the Clarksville community, and residents are expressing their sorrow over the untimely loss. Friends, family, and community members are offering condolences to Atzert’s loved ones during this difficult time.

As the investigation continues, thoughts and prayers are being shared for the victim, Michael Atzert, whose life was tragically cut short. The tragic nature of the incident highlights the fragility of life and the devastating consequences of accidents involving motor vehicles.

    What Happens Next:

Authorities continue their investigation into the fatal crash and the involvement of James Centers. Pending criminal charges could be filed against Centers based on the results of the investigation. Updates will be shared as the details unfold.

Funeral arrangements for Atzert will be announced shortly. In the meantime, the community is coming together to support the family during this heartbreaking time.
