ASCENSION PARISH, LA — The community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of Deputy Joshua Dunaway, 40, who tragically died Friday night in a motorcycle accident on LA 44.
The longtime law enforcement officer with the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving family, friends, and colleagues devastated.

    What Happened on LA 44?

According to Louisiana State Police, the deadly crash occurred shortly after 9 p.m. on Friday in Ascension Parish. Investigators say Deputy Joshua Dunaway was riding northbound on his 2024 Suzuki motorcycle when he collided with the rear of a 2024 GMC Sierra.

The GMC had just executed a right turn from Lee Drive onto LA 44 when the collision occurred. Emergency personnel responded immediately, but the injuries sustained by Dunaway were fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the location.

Authorities continue to investigate the accident, reviewing witness statements, traffic flow, and physical evidence at the scene to determine any contributing factors.

    Who Was Deputy Joshua Dunaway?

Joshua “Josh” Dunaway, age 40, was a respected deputy, a father, a friend, and a deeply valued member of the Ascension Parish community. Loved ones say he was known for his dedication to public safety, his strong work ethic, and his warm, approachable personality.

Colleagues describe him as the kind of deputy who showed up—not just for the badge, but for the people. He was widely admired for his compassion, humor, and unwavering devotion to his family.

    Career, Service, and Legacy

During his years with the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Dunaway built a reputation as a dependable and hardworking law enforcement professional. Even off duty—such as on the night of the accident—he was widely regarded as someone who carried the same integrity and spirit he brought to his job.

His career was marked by teamwork, community involvement, and a willingness to go above and beyond whenever needed. The sheriff’s office emphasized that “Joshua was not just a coworker; he was a friend, a teammate, and a caring father who cherished his family.”

His passing leaves a significant void not only within the department but across the wider community he served with dignity and heart.

    Public and Social Media Reactions

News of Deputy Joshua Dunaway’s death sparked an emotional wave of tributes across Ascension Parish and social media.
Friends, coworkers, and community members shared condolences, memories, and heartfelt posts honoring the deputy’s life and service.

Messages of support included prayers for Dunaway’s children and family, as well as gratitude for his years of commitment to the parish. Many described him as “one of the good ones,” “a true public servant,” and “a man who always lifted the people around him.”

Local residents have also used hashtags such as #DeputyDunaway, #AscensionParish, and #GoneTooSoon to express their grief and appreciation.

Official Statements and What Happens Next

The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office released an emotional statement urging the public to keep Dunaway’s family, friends, and colleagues in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Authorities confirmed that the investigation into the LA 44 motorcycle crash remains ongoing, with updates expected as more details become available.

Funeral arrangements for Deputy Dunaway have not yet been announced, but officials assured the community that information will be shared soon so residents can pay their respects to a fallen officer who served with honor.
