San Diego, CA – November 17, 2025 – The San Diego community, along with friends and family, is mourning the sudden and tragic death of Scottie Williams, a 28-year-old U.S. Army veteran, who collapsed and died shortly after completing the Silver Strand Veterans Day Half Marathon on November 11, 2025. His passing has shocked those who knew him, especially as he had been planning to “secretly marry” his girlfriend, Bree Rivera, in the near future.

A Life of Service and Struggle

Scottie Williams enlisted in the U.S. Army at a young age and served in multiple deployments, including in Syria and South Korea. During his time in service, he faced the challenges of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and he was later rated 80% disabled by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Despite the challenges he faced, Williams worked hard to rebuild his life, pursuing various opportunities and relocating to San Diego with his partner, Bree Rivera.

Known for his determination and active lifestyle, Williams had successfully completed several half-marathons before the Silver Strand race. He participated in the event to honor fellow veterans and challenge himself physically.

    The Tragic Half-Marathon

On Veterans Day, Williams crossed the finish line of the Silver Strand Veterans Day Half Marathon. Just moments after completing the race, he collapsed while heading toward a water station. Emergency responders arrived quickly and performed CPR for nearly 90 minutes, but tragically, Williams could not be revived.

The sudden nature of his death has left friends, family, and fellow veterans in disbelief. Many described Williams as strong and healthy, and the event’s abruptness has highlighted the unpredictable nature of medical emergencies, even among seemingly fit individuals.

    Family Heartbreak

Scottie’s mother, Katherine Yglesias-Herrera, spoke emotionally about her grief, recalling how just days before his death, her son had confided in her about plans to marry Rivera in secret. She reflected on their last FaceTime call, where he joyfully shared details of his life, including his apartment, plants, and the everyday moments that seemed so normal—unaware that his life would come to a sudden end.

Family members and friends have expressed deep sorrow at his passing, honoring his resilience, courage, and the positive impact he had on everyone around him.

    Legacy and Community Response

The loss of Scottie Williams has prompted an outpouring of support from both the veteran and local communities. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to assist with funeral expenses, and memorials have been organized in his honor. Veterans, friends, and community members have gathered, waving American flags and paying tribute to his service.

His story also serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggles veterans face, particularly when it comes to mental health, PTSD, and the challenges of reintegration into civilian life.

    Remembering Scottie Williams

Though his life was tragically cut short, Scottie Williams’ legacy embodies dedication, perseverance, and love. His commitment to his country, his strength in the face of personal struggles, and his plans for a future with his partner serve as lasting testaments to his character. While his family mourns, the veteran community and all who knew him are united in ensuring his memory lives on, honoring the courage and joy he shared with others.
