    LYNCHBURG, VA — The Lynchburg community is mourning the loss of Muriel Carleton Zimmerman Casey, a devoted educator, counselor, and alumnae leader who passed away on Sunday, November 16, 2025. Her decades of service to Randolph-Macon Woman’s College (R-MWC) and Randolph College, along with her commitment to community and family, leave a lasting legacy of compassion, leadership, and mentorship.

    Muriel Carleton Zimmerman Casey passed away peacefully in Lynchburg, Virginia, surrounded by loved ones.     Born in New York City on July 16, 1932, to the late Lonnie and Ruth Zimmerman, Muriel moved to Lynchburg to attend Randolph-Macon Woman’s College. Her academic path and teaching certificate laid the foundation for a career that would influence generations of students and alumnae. Muriel later earned a Master’s in Education from the University of Virginia while balancing her professional duties with raising three sons.

    Beyond her professional accomplishments, Muriel’s life was marked by devotion to family and civic engagement. She actively participated in Kappa Delta Sorority, Trinity Episcopal Church, the Lynchburg Mental Health Association, the Woman’s Club of Lynchburg, the Ragged Robin Garden Club, and multiple educational and cultural organizations, leaving a lasting impact on countless lives.

    Career, Legacy, and Contributions

    In 1972, Muriel became Randolph-Macon Woman’s College’s sixth Alumnae Director, a role she held for over 30 years. During her tenure, she served five College presidents and 11 Alumnae Association presidents, fostering a network of more than 13,000 alumnae. Her efforts shaped the lives of students, alumni, and colleagues alike, and the Muriel Zimmerman Casey Alumnae House stands as a permanent tribute to her dedication and leadership.

    Even after retirement in 2003, Muriel continued to mentor and guide alumnae staff, earning the R-MWC Alumnae Achievement Award in 2016. Her legacy of commitment, guidance, and empowerment continues to influence the college community.

    In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Trinity Episcopal Church, Randolph College, or Westminster Canterbury Lynchburg. The family extends gratitude to Westminster Canterbury staff and hospice care for their support and loving care.
