LYNCHBURG, VA — The Lynchburg community is mourning the loss of Muriel Carleton Zimmerman Casey, a devoted educator, counselor, and alumnae leader who passed away on Sunday, November 16, 2025. Her decades of service to Randolph-Macon Woman’s College (R-MWC) and Randolph College, along with her commitment to community and family, leave a lasting legacy of compassion, leadership, and mentorship.

    What Happened

Muriel Carleton Zimmerman Casey passed away peacefully in Lynchburg, Virginia, surrounded by loved ones. Her passing has deeply affected family, friends, colleagues, and the broader college and civic communities she enriched through her lifelong work in education, mentoring, and community service.

Who Was Muriel Carleton Zimmerman Casey / Background

Born in New York City on July 16, 1932, to the late Lonnie and Ruth Zimmerman, Muriel moved to Lynchburg to attend Randolph-Macon Woman’s College. Her academic path and teaching certificate laid the foundation for a career that would influence generations of students and alumnae. Muriel later earned a Master’s in Education from the University of Virginia while balancing her professional duties with raising three sons.

During her tenure, she served five College presidents and 11 Alumnae Association presidents, fostering a network of more than 13,000 alumnae. Her efforts shaped the lives of students, alumni, and colleagues alike, and the Muriel Zimmerman Casey Alumnae House stands as a permanent tribute to her dedication and leadership.

Even after retirement in 2003, Muriel continued to mentor and guide alumnae staff, earning the R-MWC Alumnae Achievement Award in 2016. Her legacy of commitment, guidance, and empowerment continues to influence the college community.
