Lewiston, Idaho — Early Saturday, December 2025.
One person is dead after a U-Haul truck explosion rocked a parking lot in Lewiston, Idaho, causing damage to nearby businesses, including a Courtyard Marriott and an Old Navy, according to local officials. Authorities say the explosion appears to have been accidental and not criminal in nature.

The incident has prompted an ongoing investigation by fire and police officials as the community seeks answers.

    What Happened

According to the Lewiston Fire Department and the City of Lewiston Police Department, the explosion occurred in the early hours of Saturday in a parking lot near several commercial buildings.

Officials said a U-Haul truck appears to have accidentally exploded, creating a powerful blast that damaged structures within the immediate radius. Despite the intensity of the explosion, no fire followed the blast, which investigators say is unusual but possible depending on the materials involved.

Emergency crews responded quickly and secured the area as debris was scattered across the scene.

    Background of the Incident

Fire officials revealed that the U-Haul truck was transporting stored materials, including flammable items such as gasoline and propane tanks. Investigators believe the combination of these materials likely contributed to the explosion.

Lewiston Fire Marshal Julian Sorrell confirmed that early findings do not suggest foul play.

“At this time, there is no indication the incident is criminal in nature,” Sorrell said in an official statement.

The identity of the deceased individual has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.

    Investigation Details

    Authorities are continuing to examine:

    • The exact cause of the U-Haul truck explosion
    • How the flammable materials were stored and secured
    • Whether safety protocols were followed

Officials emphasized that while the explosion caused significant structural damage, there was no secondary fire, which helped prevent further injuries or fatalities.

The parking lot and surrounding area were temporarily closed as investigators worked through the scene.

    Public and Community Reactions

News of the Lewiston U-Haul explosion spread quickly, with residents expressing shock and concern over how close the blast occurred to hotels and retail businesses.

Many community members took to social media to express condolences to the victim’s family and gratitude that the incident did not occur during busier hours, which could have resulted in additional casualties.

Official Statements and What Happens Next

The Lewiston Fire Department and Lewiston Police Department say the investigation remains active. Additional updates are expected as officials determine the precise sequence of events leading up to the explosion.

Authorities are also reminding the public about the dangers of transporting flammable materials without proper safety measures.

Anyone with information related to the incident is encouraged to contact local authorities.
