James “Larry” Ambrose Obituary, Death – James Lawrence Ambrose, affectionately known as “Larry,” passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at the Sonny Montgomery VA Hospital. He was 63 years old. Larry was born on May 17, 1961, in Ripley, Mississippi, to the late Marnell Ouida Wingo Ambrose and James Paul “Billy” Ambrose. His life was a testament to love, loyalty, and service—both to his family and his country.
Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Cathy Pace Ambrose, and their children: daughter Brittney Henry and son James. He was a proud and doting grandfather to five grandchildren: Baylie, Kaylin, Elijah, Makynlie, and Bo. His role as a godfather was equally cherished by Anthony Santangelo, Sam Bishop, and James Cummins. Larry is also survived by his sisters, Debbie Parker, Susan Ambrose, and Mary Croft, who mourn the loss of their dear brother.
Larry’s legacy is deeply rooted in his military service. From 1981 to 1990, he served in the regular Air Force, demonstrating his dedication and patriotism. Afterward, he became a Federal technician with the 173rd Air National Guard between 1990 and 1993 and continued his service with the Air National Guard until 2002. His military career not only shaped him but also built a strong foundation of discipline, leadership, and integrity that he carried into every other part of his life.
Beyond his military career, Larry became an active and involved member of the Fondren community in Jackson, Mississippi. Between 2003 and 2006, he served as President of the Broadmeadow Neighborhood Board, where his passion for his neighbors and his dedication to community service shone brightly. He also volunteered his time at the Privette School in the aftercare program, positively impacting young lives. During this time, Larry earned his Bachelor’s degree from Belhaven College, a testament to his thirst for knowledge and personal growth.
In 2007, Larry briefly transitioned into education, working as a 5th-grade teacher at Boyd Elementary School, where he poured his energy into shaping the future of young students. The following year, he began working as a Contract Analyst for State Aid Road Construction, a role he held until his retirement in 2017.
Larry will be remembered not just for his accomplishments, but for the warmth, compassion, and steadfast love he extended to all who knew him. His dedication to his family, his community, and his country was unwavering. He leaves behind a lasting legacy of kindness, service, and love.
The family will be announcing arrangements for a memorial service in the coming days. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Larry’s honor to veteran charities or local educational programs, reflecting the two causes closest to his heart. Rest in peace, Larry. Your presence in our lives was a gift, and your memory will be forever cherished.
