With millions of people without power in the Southeast of the country, relief and rescue operations are presently underway to aid Hurricane Helene’s victims. Volunteers in the Houston region are providing support to a large number of families.
Many homes in the Southeast have been wrecked by Hurricane Helene, and numerous buildings have been submerged under water. Over fifty people have died and millions are still without light.
In response, the Texas Gulf Coast Region of the American Red Cross is mobilizing to support recovery efforts by sending out 20 staff members to help with disaster relief efforts. The Houston metropolitan region is home to nine of these volunteers.
“After hurricanes, Florida and the Carolinas provide support to help in our recovery efforts. We make an effort to support others in the same way that we are supported. “We would like to impart our expertise and experience to those families who are enduring the process of healing,” said Jack Peters, the American Red Cross Texas Gulf Coast Regional Disaster Officer.
To help, these volunteers have been sent to Georgia, North Carolina, and Florida. This past Monday was the first person sent out.
According to Peters, “they are involved in distributing supplies, managing logistics, serving meals, supporting and sheltering missions, and attending to the needs of families affected by the disaster.
