We mourn the loss of Albany Police Department Lieutenant Larry Laster. After over three decades of duty, passion, and strong community connection, Lt. Laster died yesterday. Lt. Laster began his 29-year career with the Albany Police Department on July 8, 1985. Lt. Laster was a skilled, empathetic, and loyal officer who went above and beyond to serve and protect Albany residents.
He was trusted by his peers and community for his insight and leadership. On the streets or in the precinct, Lt. Laster was recognized for his calmness, ability to handle problems under pressure, and steadfast loyalty to the Albany Police Department.
Lt. Laster stayed involved in the department after retiring in 2014. Retirement did not end his service. He became Fleet Manager of the Albany Police Department on March 11, 2019. Lt. Laster continued to use his talents and knowledge to keep the department’s fleet in good condition for officers’ everyday duties. His continued service to the department after retirement shows his dedication to law enforcement and Albany’s well-being. Many department members considered Lt. Laster a mentor, guide, and friend.
His invaluable advice and willingness to share his experiences shaped the next generation of officers. His quiet strength, sense of responsibility, and genuine caring for the community made him a constant in the department. He provided safety, trust, and reassurance to many in the Albany Police Department and around the community for years to come. We mourn this remarkable man and offer our condolences to his family.
