Chan Tuck Cheong, the veteran hawker who founded famed Fatty Cheong Char Siew Rice stall at ABC Brickworks Market, has passed away. He was 56.
His stall has constant long queues for its fabulous ‘bu jian tian’ (never seeing the sky) char siew, so named as it is an ethereally tender cut of pork from the pig’s underarm.
Later on, the cheerful, plump hawker—who goes by the loving moniker “Fatty Cheong”—opened a second stand close by where he specializes in wonton mee with a fried egg on top. In the same hawker center, he also opened a beverages stand and another concept serving traditional Cantonese zi char. Since then, the latter has closed in 2022.
Tuck Cheong, a father of three, revealed in a previous interview with 8days.sg that his daughter works at a F&B management company, and his two sons assist him in running his wonton mee and roast pork stands.
Tuck Cheong’s son, Lachlan Chan, shared the news of his passing in a Facebook post this morning (Oct 20). He wrote in Chinese: “Dad, you are finally free from that pain. Don’t worry, we will take good care of mummie. We will live well for our remaining days. You will always be our pride.”
