It is with great sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sergeant Patrick Breen of the Yonkers Police Department (YPD). Patrick, a dedicated public servant and beloved member of the Yonkers community, passed away on December 15, 2024, at the age of 55. His sudden death has left his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire Yonkers community in profound mourning. Patrick’s life and legacy as a law enforcement officer, mentor, and friend will be remembered and cherished by all who had the honor of knowing him.
Born on May 8, 1969, in Yonkers, New York, Patrick was the son of Michael and Mary Breen. Growing up in Yonkers, Patrick developed a deep love for his hometown and a strong sense of duty to serve and protect his community. He graduated from Yonkers High School, where he was known for his kindness, integrity, and strong work ethic. Patrick always had a desire to make a difference, and his decision to pursue a career in law enforcement was fueled by his unwavering commitment to keeping his neighbors safe and improving the lives of those around him.
After completing his studies in criminal justice, Patrick joined the Yonkers Police Department in 1993. He quickly rose through the ranks, proving himself to be a dedicated, compassionate, and skilled officer. Over the years, Patrick worked in several units within the department, including patrol, narcotics, and community policing, and was known for his exceptional leadership and his ability to connect with people. In 2015, Patrick was promoted to the rank of Sergeant, a position he took great pride in. He was respected by his peers and loved by those under his command for his fairness, calm demeanor, and deep commitment to the safety and well-being of his fellow officers and the people of Yonkers.
Patrick’s career was marked by his dedication to serving his community with honor and integrity. He was a fierce advocate for the residents of Yonkers, always going above and beyond the call of duty to ensure their safety and security. Whether responding to emergencies, organizing community outreach programs, or mentoring young officers, Patrick was always at the forefront of efforts to build trust and unity between the police and the community. In addition to his work as a police officer, Patrick was a committed family man. He married his high school sweetheart, Lisa, in 1995, and together they raised two children, Michael and Sarah. Patrick was a devoted husband and father, always making time for his family despite the demanding nature of his job. He was incredibly proud of his children and loved to support them in everything they did. Whether attending sporting events, helping with school projects, or spending time together on family vacations, Patrick made sure his family knew how much they meant to him.
Patrick was also a man of deep faith, and his spiritual life played an important role in shaping his character. He was an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Yonkers, where he volunteered his time and supported various community efforts. His faith in God and his belief in the importance of kindness, compassion, and service to others were central to who he was as a person. Patrick lived his life with the values of honesty, integrity, and humility, and he inspired everyone around him to do the same.
Outside of his professional and family life, Patrick enjoyed spending time outdoors. He loved hiking, fishing, and enjoying the beauty of nature, often taking trips with his family to escape the stresses of work and reconnect with each other. Patrick was also an avid sports fan, particularly of New York teams, and he enjoyed spending time watching games and sharing the experience with friends and family. His love for sports was just another reflection of his team-oriented mindset, which he carried into both his personal and professional life.
Patrick’s passing has left a void in the Yonkers Police Department and the community he served with such distinction. His colleagues remember him as a mentor and a friend, always ready with guidance and support. He was the kind of leader who led by example, and his dedication to his work inspired those around him to strive for excellence. The impact he made on the Yonkers Police Department will be felt for years to come, and his legacy of service and compassion will continue to influence the department’s future.
Patrick is survived by his wife, Lisa; his children, Michael and Sarah; his parents, Michael and Mary Breen; his siblings, John, Brian, and Elizabeth; and many extended family members, friends, and colleagues who cherished him. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, and he leaves behind a legacy of love, loyalty, and service to his community.
A celebration of Patrick’s life will be held on December 18, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Yonkers, followed by a procession to the Ferncliff Cemetery for a private burial. Visitation will take place on December 17, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the church. Family, friends, and community members are invited to attend and honor Patrick’s memory, sharing stories and reflecting on the remarkable life he lived.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Yonkers Police Benevolent Association or the American Cancer Society in Patrick’s memory, as he was always an advocate for both law enforcement causes and charitable organizations that support those in need.
Patrick Breen’s passing is a tremendous loss, but his legacy of service, love, and dedication will never be forgotten.
