Dawn Tucker, 67, of Durham, North Carolina, has been identified as the fatality of a horrific wrong-way crash on Saturday evening. The terrible incident, which killed Tucker and injured three others, occurred soon before 7 p.m. on North Roxboro Street, according to Durham Police.
Nathane Blackmon, 42, of Erwin, has been identified as the wrong-way driver in the incident. According to police, Blackmon was driving a 2011 GMC Yukon northbound when it crossed all travel lanes into oncoming traffic. The Yukon then crashed with Tucker’s southbound 2009 Honda Accord and a southbound 2000 Chevrolet Silverado.
Tucker, a retired school teacher, suffered serious injuries and was taken to a neighboring hospital. Despite medical personnel’s attempts, she eventually died from her injuries. A passenger in her vehicle was also critically injured, but thankfully did not sustain life-threatening injuries and is presently being treated at the hospital.
Blackmon, who had non-life-threatening injuries, was sent to a nearby hospital for treatment. He has since been charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI), driving left of center, and without wearing a seatbelt. Authorities have indicated that additional charges may be filed as the investigation proceeds.
The driver of the Chevy Silverado sustained minor injuries but did not require treatment. The crash created substantial traffic delays in the region while authorities investigated the circumstances behind the collision.
