It is with profound sorrow that Community Legal Aid announces the passing of our dear friend and colleague, John Petit, Managing Attorney in the Canton office. John’s death leaves a tremendous void in our hearts and in the communities he served so faithfully. He passed away after a lifetime of dedication to improving the lives of others, and while we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the legacy he leaves behind.
John Petit’s career was defined by his unwavering commitment to justice, compassion, and service. He dedicated his life to helping those who needed it most, particularly those who lacked access to the legal resources they so desperately required. John’s legal career spanned over many years, and his diverse experiences in public service and private practice gave him a unique perspective that allowed him to be a powerful advocate for low-income and vulnerable clients.
John began his legal career in various roles before joining Community Legal Aid in 2006. His extensive experience included serving as an attorney for multiple child support agencies, as an assistant prosecutor, and in private practice. However, it was his work with the Jesuits of Michigan and Ohio that truly exemplified John’s deep commitment to social justice. As an attorney with the Jesuits, John provided legal services to low-income and homeless clients, a role that allowed him to make a significant difference in the lives of people who often felt forgotten by society. This role, in particular, demonstrated his passion for helping those who were most in need, and it was this same dedication that he brought with him to Community Legal Aid.
At Community Legal Aid, John worked tirelessly as a staff attorney and later as Managing Attorney in the Canton office. In this role, John was a mentor to his colleagues and a staunch advocate for the many individuals who relied on the services of the organization. His leadership was marked by his deep empathy, wisdom, and unshakeable belief in the power of the law to make a difference. John’s impact on his clients and his colleagues cannot be overstated. He was a tireless advocate, a brilliant legal mind, and above all, a kind and generous soul.
John’s commitment to his clients was unmatched. He fought for their rights with the same vigor and passion he would use if their cause were his own. His ability to listen, to understand, and to act with integrity made him a trusted and respected figure in the legal community. Whether advocating for a single parent fighting for child support, or representing a homeless individual seeking legal aid, John approached every case with the same dedication and professionalism, always with the goal of improving the lives of those he served.
In addition to his legal work, John was known for his kindness and generosity. He was the kind of person who would drop everything to help a colleague or a friend in need, and he did so with a smile and a heart full of compassion. His warm and approachable nature made him a beloved member of the Community Legal Aid team and an indispensable part of the organization’s work.
John’s colleagues remember him not just for his professional accomplishments but for the warmth and humor he brought to the office. A memorial service to celebrate John’s life and legacy will be held. Family, friends, and colleagues are invited to gather to remember and honor John’s incredible life and the indelible mark he left on all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Community Legal Aid in honor of John’s work and dedication to serving those in need.
