Rickey Melvin Obituary, Death; – Authorities have identified the pedestrian who tragically lost his life after being struck by a commuter bus.
On Monday at 5:56 a.m., the Middletown police received a 911 call reporting that a pedestrian had been hit on Wickham Avenue at the intersection with Fairlawn Avenue. The caller indicated that the pedestrian was in critical condition, with bystanders already administering CPR.
Upon arrival, police found the pedestrian lying in the eastbound lane of Wickham Avenue, while a Coach USA commuter bus was stopped in the westbound lane beside him. The bus was occupied solely by the driver, who remained at the scene and cooperated fully with the authorities. The injured pedestrian was transported to Garnet Health Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
The Detective Division of the Middletown Police Department has initiated an investigation into the incident, with assistance from the New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit and the Commercial Enforcement Unit. The bus was equipped with a functioning dash camera that recorded the collision. Currently, no charges are pending against the bus driver, as reported by the police. The bus has been towed from the scene for a comprehensive inspection.
The deceased pedestrian has been identified as Rickey Melvin, a 67-year-old resident of Middletown. Reports indicate that he was homeless and had been residing at various locations in the area over the past few weeks. Melvin had a physical disability that significantly restricted his walking speed and was wearing dark clothing, which may have contributed to the accident.
