At least 10 people have been killed in a shooting at an adult education center in western Sweden, marking one of the deadliest attacks in the country’s history.
The mass shooting took place at the Risbergska School in the city of Örebro on Tuesday at 12:33 p.m. local time (11:33 GMT). Initially, police reported that at least five people had been shot.
Hours later, authorities updated the death toll, stating that around 10 people had lost their lives, though an exact number was not provided. The identities of the victims were not immediately released.
“We know that about 10 people have been killed today. The reason we can’t be more precise at this moment is the scale of the incident,” said local police chief Roberto Eid Forest.
A spokesperson for Örebro University Hospital reported that five patients were admitted, with one suffering minor injuries. Four underwent surgery, two of whom were stable, while another remained in serious condition.
Police believe the attacker was among the deceased and stated that no further threats were expected. They also indicated there was no suspected link to terrorism.
A large emergency response was deployed, and authorities initially instructed students on campus to remain indoors while urging the public to avoid the area.
Maria Pegado, a 54-year-old teacher at the school, described the chaotic scene. She said someone burst into her classroom after lunch, shouting for everyone to evacuate.
“I led my 15 students into the hallway, and we started running. Then I heard two gunshots, but we managed to get out. We were close to the school entrance. I saw people dragging the injured—first one, then another. That’s when I realized how serious it was,” she recalled.
