A 30-year-old man was fatally struck by an Amtrak train along the Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks in Kent on Wednesday evening, according to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The victim, identified as Benito Martinez, died from multiple blunt force injuries, the medical examiner confirmed.
Preliminary reports indicate that Martinez, a Kent resident, was crossing the tracks from east to west near East Titus Street at approximately 5:21 p.m. when he was hit by a northbound train traveling from Portland to Vancouver, B.C. An Amtrak spokesperson stated that none of the 131 passengers on board were injured.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the Kent Police tip line at 253-856-5808. The investigation remains ongoing.
In cases like this, surviving family members may have grounds for a wrongful death claim. Such claims can seek compensation for loss of companionship, emotional distress, and pain and suffering resulting from a tragic accident.
Candice Bond, a national legal analyst and experienced train accident attorney, emphasized the importance of conducting an independent investigation.
“Train accidents are often complex, with multiple contributing factors,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “Train companies typically deploy their own investigators and resources to protect their interests. An experienced attorney can help families by securing expert witnesses, gathering key evidence, and ensuring their legal rights are protected.”
Bond also noted that navigating the legal process can be overwhelming for grieving families, but a knowledgeable attorney can provide guidance and advocacy during this difficult time.
