It is with both sorrow and gratitude for a life beautifully lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Almeta Craghead Angel, age 95, of Bedford, Virginia. Almeta passed away on Friday, August 1, 2025, surrounded by love and comfort at Spring Oak at the Elks National Home. Her long life was a testament to grace, resilience, and quiet strength, and her departure marks the closing of a cherished chapter in the lives of all who knew and loved her.

    What Happened

Almeta’s life was marked by deep faith, love for family, and an unwavering dedication to her community. She was known for her strength, kindness, and her commitment to nurturing those around her. Her peaceful passing brings sorrow to those who loved her, but her memory and the lessons she imparted will continue to inspire and guide her family and friends.

    Who Was Almeta Craghead Angel?

Born on Monday, October 1, 1929, in Bedford County, Almeta was the beloved daughter of the late James Herbert Craghead and Dora Mae Ayers Craghead. Raised with deep values of faith, kindness, and hard work, she embodied the heart of a true Southern woman—strong in spirit, gentle in demeanor, and endlessly generous with her love and time.

Almeta married the love of her life, Thomas “Tom” Angel, and together they built a home grounded in faith, family, and community. Their bond was one of quiet devotion and enduring love. Though Tom preceded her in death many years ago, Almeta never ceased to speak of him with warmth and admiration. Their union brought forth a loving family that she cherished beyond measure.

As a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Almeta’s life was defined by her unwavering devotion to those around her. Her children and grandchildren recall her as a steady and loving presence—one who never missed a birthday, always had a listening ear, and was known for her warm hugs and homemade cornbread. She made the simplest moments feel like treasured memories and found joy in the beauty of everyday life.

    Legacy and Remembrance

Almeta was a lifelong member of her local Baptist church, where she taught Sunday School for over 30 years. She sang in the choir, helped organize countless church potlucks, and served faithfully on the mission committee. Her faith was a quiet yet powerful force in her life—guiding her actions, shaping her compassion, and sustaining her through life’s challenges.

In addition to her parents and husband, Almeta is reunited in Heaven with her beloved siblings, many dear friends, and a host of loved ones she longed to see again. Though she endured many losses in her 95 years, she never lost her hope, her sense of humor, or her abiding belief in the goodness of others.

Almeta leaves behind a family that adored her, including:

    • Her children and their spouses, who were her pride and joy

    • Numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who always looked forward to stories on the front porch, Saturday afternoon cobblers, and her warm, wise advice

    • A host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will miss her deeply

    • A community of friends, neighbors, caregivers, and fellow residents at Spring Oak, who came to know her as a light in their days

Almeta’s love for flowers, gospel hymns, embroidery, and watching the seasons change from her kitchen window was well known. She had a special fondness for cardinals, which she believed were signs from loved ones gone before her. She also enjoyed reading her Bible each morning and writing in her prayer journal—rituals that brought her immense peace and clarity.

    Final Tribute

Though her physical presence will be deeply missed, the spirit of Almeta Craghead Angel will forever live on in the values she instilled, the kindness she shared, and the legacy of love she leaves behind. Her life was a blessing to so many, and her memory will be treasured always.

A funeral service to celebrate Almeta’s life will be held at [Funeral Home Name, if known] in Bedford, with Pastor [Name, if known] officiating. Interment will follow at [Cemetery Name, if known]. The family will receive friends for visitation prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to the [Church Name] Mission Fund or the Alzheimer’s Association, causes that were close to Almeta’s heart.

Rest in eternal peace, Almeta. Your journey was long, your love immeasurable, and your legacy everlasting.
