TULSA, Okla. — With deep sorrow and heavy hearts, the Tulsa community is mourning the passing of Detective John Brown, a revered and devoted member of the Tulsa Police Department, whose career spanned an extraordinary 35 years of unwavering service and sacrifice.

A Life of Purpose and Service

Born in Oakland, California in 1965 and raised in Beggs, Oklahoma, John Brown found his calling in law enforcement early in life, inspired by his brother’s footsteps. That calling led to a career that would define him as a man of courage, justice, and compassion.

John joined the Tulsa Police Department on September 11, 1989, beginning a lifelong journey of public service. Throughout his distinguished career, he served in several divisions, including Burglary, Robbery, Patrol, and the Special Investigations Division. In 2012, he joined the Homicide Unit, where his insight, integrity, and commitment to justice made him a pillar in the department.

    A Career Marked by Valor

One of the most defining moments of Detective Brown’s career came in 1994, when he was awarded the Medal of Valor for his bravery during an undercover operation with the VICE Unit. His courage under pressure and dedication to protecting the public never wavered.

Colleagues remember him as a gifted investigator with a relentless pursuit of truth. His long-standing partnership with Sgt. Dave Walker became a symbol of trust and effective teamwork within the Homicide Unit. John often spoke about the “profound responsibility” of homicide work—of getting inside a killer’s mind to bring justice and peace to grieving families.

    A Devoted Family Man

Beyond the uniform, John Brown was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He shared a rich life with his wife, Kathy, and took immense pride in their three children and five grandchildren. Whether it was on family trips or during quiet evenings at home, John cherished his role as a family man just as deeply as he did his badge.

    Legacy and Tributes

Detective Brown’s passing has left a profound void within the Tulsa Police Department and the community at large. He was more than just a law enforcement officer—he was a mentor, a role model, and a true public servant. His legacy lives on through the lives he touched, the justice he pursued, and the values he embodied.

“He was the kind of detective that made you want to be better,” said a colleague. “His loss is deeply felt, but his influence will never fade.”

As Tulsa mourns, thoughts and prayers are with Kathy, their children, grandchildren, and all who knew and loved John. The city honors his service, his sacrifices, and his lasting impact.

    Thank you, Detective John Brown.
You served with honor, lived with purpose, and will never be forgotten.
