It is with great sadness that we share the passing of David Max Hooper, a pioneering and much-loved Anaesthetic Technician, who died on Friday, July 25 (NZ time) in Bangkok, with his beloved partner Ingrid by his side. David was 77 years old, born on March 29, 1948, and leaves behind a legacy of compassion, mentorship, and professional excellence that has deeply touched the New Zealand healthcare community.

    What Happened

David Max Hooper passed away peacefully in Bangkok, surrounded by his loved ones. His death marks the loss of a dedicated professional who spent decades supporting his colleagues, students, and patients. David was deeply involved in the New Zealand healthcare community, particularly in the field of Anaesthesia. He was known for his incredible ability to calm, reassure, and support others during critical moments, both in and out of the operating room.

    Who Was David Max Hooper?

David Hooper was more than just a highly skilled Anaesthetic Technician; he was a beloved mentor, colleague, and friend. His career began in 1978 with the Auckland Hospital Board, where he was trained through the New Zealand Department of Health program at Greenlane Hospital. David was one of the country’s first Anaesthetic Technicians and joined the Counties team in 1990, where he helped grow the team from nine members to 82. He was passionate about Obstetrics and Gynaecology, where he made an impact by putting patients at ease during both joyous and vulnerable moments. He had a particular gift for mentoring students and colleagues, always ready with advice or a helping hand. David was also deeply proud of his daughter Rebecca, who followed in his footsteps and trained as an Anaesthetic Technician.

    Background or Timeline

David’s life in the healthcare field was marked by service, dedication, and a love for helping others. Throughout his career, he advocated for the Anaesthetic Technician profession, expanding its recognition and importance in the medical community. David’s contributions went beyond his work as a technician; he was also part of the team responsible for identifying the victims of the Erebus disaster. Even at 77, David remained active, working three days a week. His love for the job never waned, and his passion for teaching and helping others continued until his final days.

    Public or Social Media Reaction

Tributes and condolences have poured in from colleagues, students, and patients alike. David’s passing has left a profound impact on the community he was a part of for over four decades. The New Zealand Anaesthetic Technicians Society (NZATS) shared a heartfelt message remembering David’s legacy, while individuals who worked with him have shared stories of his mentorship, his calm presence, and his unwavering dedication to patient care. His memory lives on in the many lives he touched and in the profession he helped build.

Official Statement or What Happens Next

A memorial service to honor David Max Hooper’s life and contributions is being planned for September. His family, friends, and colleagues will come together to celebrate his life, his work, and the indelible mark he left on the healthcare community. Donations in his memory will be directed to causes close to his heart. His legacy will continue to live on in the many people he mentored and supported over the years.
