Omaha, NE – Deng Mayar, a 22-year-old forward for the Omaha men’s basketball team, tragically passed away on Saturday, August 16, 2025, following a drowning incident at the Blackridge Reservoir in Herriman, Utah. Mayar, who transferred to Omaha from North Dakota this offseason, was a rising star on the team and beloved by his teammates and coaches.

    What Happened

According to news reports, Mayar was with a friend at the Blackridge Reservoir when both began to struggle in the water. Mayar’s friend was able to make it to shore but then returned to help Mayar, who was still struggling in the water. Tragically, Mayar went underwater and did not resurface. Despite rescue crews’ swift response, they recovered his body late Saturday night.

His friend, who attempted to rescue him, was hospitalized but is expected to recover, as confirmed by local reports.

    Who Was Deng Mayar

Deng Mayar was a 6-foot-8 forward who played college basketball for North Dakota before transferring to Omaha. He was raised in Salt Lake City and became a well-regarded player in the Summit League, where he averaged 6.3 points and 4.0 rebounds per game during his final season with North Dakota. His remarkable performance in his team’s season finale—where he scored 12 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in a 92-79 win over South Dakota—showcased his potential before he transferred to Omaha.

Mayar was known not only for his basketball talents but also for his infectious personality. He was described by Omaha men’s basketball coach Chris Crutchfield as a positive and hardworking player who made significant strides during the offseason. “He was a joy to be around and made our culture better,” said Crutchfield. His presence in the Omaha program was a source of inspiration for teammates and coaches alike.

    Background or Timeline

Mayar’s tragic death occurred just after he had transferred to Omaha for the upcoming season. His family, friends, teammates, and coaches are mourning the loss of a young man who had so much ahead of him. Mayar had shown great promise and had worked hard over the summer to make a significant impact on the Omaha basketball team. He had also recently concluded his successful tenure with North Dakota before making the transition.

    Public or Social Media Reaction

News of Mayar’s death has sent shockwaves through the basketball community. Tributes have poured in from fans, teammates, and basketball professionals alike, all remembering his talent, kindness, and positive spirit. The Omaha men’s basketball program has been especially vocal in honoring his memory. Coach Crutchfield shared that their hearts go out to Mayar’s family and teammates, describing him as a “joy to be around” and expressing how deeply he will be missed.

Official Statement or What Happens Next

In a statement issued by the University of Omaha, the basketball program expressed its profound grief over the loss of Mayar, emphasizing how much he had impacted the team in such a short time. The school also offered condolences to his family, friends, and the basketball community at large. Funeral arrangements and a memorial service are expected to be announced soon.

As of now, the Omaha men’s basketball team and the community continue to mourn the loss of a player with tremendous potential who had a bright future ahead of him.
