Public funeral set for Friday, Aug. 22 to honor fallen officer, David Rose, after fatal shooting on Aug. 8
What Happened
On August 8, 2025, DeKalb County police officer David Rose, 33, was tragically killed in the line of duty when a gunman opened fire outside the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) campus in Atlanta. Officer Rose, who was the first to respond to the shooting, was fatally shot during the attack. The shooting caused a lockdown near Emory University and led to six buildings at the CDC being hit by gunfire.
The suspect, Patrick White, 30, reportedly blamed COVID-19 vaccines for his mental health issues and fired over 180 shots at the CDC. White was later found dead near the scene. Officer Rose was the only fatality in the attack, though no civilians were injured.
Who Is Officer David Rose?

Rose leaves behind his wife, who is seven months pregnant with their third child, and two young children.
His mother, Deveane Atkinson, shared with 11Alive that her son had a deep commitment to serving others and was always known for his kindness, even temperament, and willingness to help.
