In a tragic turn of events on Saturday night, August 23, 2025, a high-speed police chase in Columbia County led to a fatal crash and fire, leaving 45-year-old Martel Kyles dead and his passenger, 23-year-old Shaderrious Gibson, injured but alive. The chase and subsequent crash have sparked further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

    What Happened

At around 11 p.m. on Jimmie Dyess Parkway near the I-20 eastbound ramp, a Columbia County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a gold Toyota Camry driven by Martel Kyles. Kyles, who was wanted in Richmond County for simple assault, refused to stop and initiated a dangerous high-speed chase. Speeds reached over 100 mph as the pursuit continued through several major roads. Despite deputies deploying stop sticks, Kyles continued driving at high speeds until he lost control of his vehicle at the intersection of Wrightsboro Road and John Deere Parkway.

As he attempted a right turn at 90 mph, Kyles’ car skidded, jumped the median, and struck a large sign before flipping and landing on its roof. The car then began to catch fire. Deputies broke windows to rescue Gibson, who was later hospitalized with no major injuries. However, Kyles, who was not wearing a seatbelt, suffered severe trauma and was found unresponsive. Despite attempts to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

    Who Is Martel Kyles?

Martel Kyles, 45, was known to have an extensive criminal history, which included prior charges for drug possession, terroristic threats, obstruction, and false imprisonment. He was wanted at the time of the crash for charges stemming from a 2024 arrest, including sexual battery, simple battery, and a parole violation. Kyles’ death follows a series of legal issues and brushes with law enforcement.

    Background or Timeline

    • 11:00 p.m., August 23, 2025: A deputy attempted a traffic stop on Kyles, wanted for simple assault and flagged as potentially violent.
    • High-speed chase: The pursuit reached speeds exceeding 100 mph, with deputies attempting to stop Kyles using stop sticks.
    • Crash: Kyles lost control of his vehicle at the intersection of Wrightsboro Road and John Deere Parkway, crashing and flipping the car before it caught fire.
    • Rescue and aftermath: Shaderrious Gibson was rescued and taken to the hospital, while Kyles was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.

    Public or Social Media Reaction

The community, especially those familiar with Kyles’ criminal history, has reacted with mixed emotions. Many residents of Columbia County have expressed sympathy for Gibson’s survival, while others have expressed frustration and concern over the escalation of the chase. Social media has been flooded with discussions on the dangers of high-speed pursuits and their often tragic outcomes.

Official Statement or What Happens Next

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the details of the crash and is continuing the investigation into the pursuit and its deadly conclusion. The sheriff’s department has reassured the public that no deputies were injured during the chase. The crash has sparked debates on police pursuit tactics and the safety of high-speed chases in populated areas.

The department will continue to review the incident, and the public is encouraged to stay informed as the investigation unfolds.
