Three cultural visionaries — Turkish activist Osman Kavala, Chinese scholar Li Yuan, and Belgian author David Van Reybrouck — have been named laureates of the 2025 Goethe Medal. The prestigious German honor recognizes their outstanding contributions to global cultural exchange, democracy, and dialogue.

    What Happened

The Goethe Institut announced that Kavala, Yuan, and Van Reybrouck will each receive the Goethe Medal during a ceremony on August 28, 2025, in Weimar — the birthday of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The award, Germany’s official decoration for cultural exchange, is granted annually to individuals who strengthen intercultural understanding and promote human rights through art, language, and dialogue.

    Who Is Osman Kavala?

Osman Kavala is a Turkish cultural promoter, philanthropist, and social justice advocate who has been imprisoned since 2017. In 2022, he was handed a life sentence on politically motivated charges. Despite incarceration, Kavala continues to support initiatives through Anadolu Kültür, the NGO he founded, which focuses on cultural cooperation, human rights, and preserving heritage.
Projects such as the Armenian-Turkish cinema platform and the Armenian-Turkish Youth Symphony Orchestra showcase his belief in art’s power to bridge divides. In a statement from prison, Kavala reaffirmed: “I always believed that collaboration in art projects and cultural activities could help to overcome prejudices and contribute to mutual understanding.”

    Who Is Li Yuan?

Li Yuan, professor of German Studies at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, is a pioneer in language education and intercultural exchange. Her groundbreaking work combines artificial intelligence and linguistics to improve German learning for Chinese students. Beyond developing widely used textbooks, she leads the Centre for Global Competence, encouraging young scholars to engage with international perspectives.
Li Yuan’s career has bridged China and Germany since her doctoral studies in Berlin, where she embraced open academic debate — a value she now instills in her students.

    Who Is David Van Reybrouck?

David Van Reybrouck, a Belgian archaeologist, historian, and writer, is acclaimed for giving voice to overlooked perspectives in history. His book Congo: The Epic History of a People brought international attention to Congolese narratives, while Revolusi: Indonesia and the Birth of the Modern World documented first-hand accounts of Indonesia’s independence struggle.
In addition to his literary work, Van Reybrouck founded G1000, a citizens’ platform for democratic dialogue that has inspired participatory assemblies across Europe. The Goethe Institut praised his ability to merge rigorous research with human-centered storytelling.

    Background or Timeline

    • 1955: The Goethe Medal was established as Germany’s official state decoration for cultural exchange.

    • 2017: Osman Kavala was arrested in Turkey on charges widely condemned by human rights groups.

    • 2022: Kavala was sentenced to life in prison, yet Anadolu Kültür continued its projects.

    • 2025: Kavala, Yuan, and Van Reybrouck are honored as this year’s laureates, highlighting the global dimension of the award.

    Public or Social Media Reaction

News of the awards has sparked international discussion. Human rights advocates hailed Kavala’s recognition as a powerful statement of solidarity with imprisoned intellectuals. Academics praised Li Yuan’s forward-thinking approach to global education, while readers and democracy activists applauded Van Reybrouck for giving marginalized voices a platform in both literature and civic life.

Official Statement or What Happens Next

The Goethe Institut emphasized that the 2025 laureates embody the values of dialogue, openness, and empathy across borders. The official award ceremony will take place in Weimar on August 28, 2025, attended by cultural leaders, diplomats, and international scholars.
