WASHINGTON — A recall has been issued for certain dog and cat food products sold across the U.S. due to potential contamination with salmonella and listeria. The recall, announced by Viva Raw LLC, a Charlotte-based company, affects products sold under two lot numbers: Lot 21495 and Lot 21975. The affected products were distributed nationwide and are sold frozen in clear, vacuum-sealed packaging.
What Products Are Affected?
The recalled products are as follows:
- Lot 21495: Viva Ground Beef for Dogs and Viva Beef & Turkey for Puppies
- Lot 21975: Viva Ground Chicken for Dogs, Viva Chunked Chicken for Dogs, Viva Chicken for Cats, and Viva Pure Chicken
The products were sold directly to consumers between July 2 and August 21, 2025, and to select retailers in New York, Illinois, South Carolina, Florida, Kansas, California, and Arizona. The exact number of affected packages is unclear. The lot numbers can be found on the top of the packaging.
Health Risks
The contamination was discovered during routine testing by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture. Although no illnesses in pets or people have been reported, salmonella and listeria pose serious health risks.
- Human Symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. More severe cases may result in arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, or urinary tract issues. Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to listeria, which can lead to miscarriage.
- Pet Symptoms: Pets may experience lethargy, diarrhea, fever, and vomiting, or less severe symptoms like reduced appetite and abdominal pain. Infected pets can spread bacteria to other animals or humans.
What Should You Do If You Have Affected Pet Food?
If you have purchased any of the recalled Viva Raw products, check the lot number. If your lot number is 21495 or 21975, stop using the product immediately and dispose of it securely, making sure that wildlife cannot access it.
The affected pet food should not be sold, donated, or fed to animals.
Additionally, wash and sanitize pet food bowls, storage containers, or any surfaces that came into contact with the recalled meat.
